The turkeys are about seven weeks old now and we are allowing them to free range all day. In the evenings we return them to the safety of their brooder in the garage. At eight weeks old they will live outside 24/7. These two have been an interesting addition to farm life. We recently learned that the smaller of the two (pictured left) is a male. This was determined after he puffed up and started "displaying" his feathers near one of the cats. The other one, whom we've always called, "big guy" may turn out to be a big gal instead. The turkeys are much more people-oriented than chickens. When they see us outside, they often want to be near us. They are also developing an interesting relationship with the cats. Our white and orange cat, Hank, was very affectionate with them a couple of days ago. The turkeys were pecking at him (presumably to get the bugs off), and the cat was rolling over and rubbing up against the turkeys.
Yesterday, the turkeys started getting into the cats' food dish in the garage. When I told Justin about it, he replied, "they'll eat anything they can get their beaks on!"

How cute! I remember having "pet" turkeys as a child when we lived on my grandparents' ranch. They were very friendly. It was a bit traumatic, however, when they became Thanksgiving dinner one year!!! I wasn't quite prepared for that! Ha ha. :o)
